Why These Three Horses Have Real Chances Today
If you’ve been scanning the day’s racing and your eye stopped on three names — Arctic Tsar, Gunfighter and Rambuso Creek — you’re not alone. The odds on the board (roughly 3.5, 2.25 and 3.5) already show the market likes them, but the form, course records and recent runs explain why they deserve to be near the head of the market.
Here’s a clear look at each one and the case for them winning
Arctic Tsar (Kempton A.W., 17:00 – Nursery Handicap, 1m)
This progressive 2-year-old colt, trained by Clive Cox, has transformed since being stepped up in trip and switched into handicaps.
After some ordinary early runs over 6f, he has won his last two starts over 7f — first at Leicester on good-to-soft and then, most impressively, at Kempton on the all-weather last time out. That Kempton victory was emphatic: he travelled strongly, took control inside the final two furlongs and pulled clear to score by over four lengths.
Today he steps up to a mile for the first time and faces a 12 lb rise for that last win. The extra furlong looks a logical next step given how strongly he finished last time, and the fact he already has a course win here is a big plus. Rossa Ryan takes the ride.
Bottom line: A horse on a steep upward curve, proven on the track, and still open to further improvement. The hike in the weights is the only real question mark, but the manner of his recent wins suggests he can cope.
Gunfighter (Kempton A.W., 17:30 – Handicap, 1m)
The clear favourite of the three and for good reason. This 5-year-old gelding, trained by John Butler, is an all-weather specialist with four career wins — every single one of them on synthetic surfaces.
He scored over course and distance at Kempton last month in a Class 5 handicap, showing a strong late kick. Five days ago he returned to the same track and distance and finished a close third, only narrowly beaten after meeting some interference in the closing stages. Many observers felt he was a shade unlucky not to win that day.
David Egan is back in the saddle today. Gunfighter stays the mile well, handles the Kempton surface, and is only 3 lb higher than his most recent win. At around 2.25 he is short, but the form is solid and the track record is hard to ignore.
Bottom line: Consistent, proven over C&D, and coming off a near-miss that can be easily forgiven. He looks the one they all have to beat in his race.
Rambuso Creek (Nottingham, 17:22 – Handicap, 5f)
A more experienced 7-year-old who knows his way around Nottingham. Trained by Michael Herrington, he won a Class 6 over 6f at this course in June on soft ground and ran a solid fourth here last week over the same trip, finishing strongly despite some traffic problems.
Today he drops back to 5f. That shorter trip is well within his range — he has previous winning form over five furlongs — and the course clearly suits him. Tom Eaves takes the ride. At around 3.5 he offers a bit more value than the Kempton pair while still looking one of the more reliable options in a competitive Class 6 sprint.
Bottom line: Course form is strong, the drop in trip looks positive, and he arrives in decent heart after a solid recent effort. A horse who often runs his race when the conditions and track are right.
Quick Summary
Horse | Course | Key Strengths | Main Concern | Rough Odds |
Arctic Tsar | Kempton AW | Improving rapidly, course winner | Weight rise + extra furlong | 3.5 |
Gunfighter | Kempton AW | Proven C&D, consistent AW form | Short price | 2.25 |
Rambuso Creek | Nottingham | Course winner, drops in trip | Competitive race | 3.5 |
All three arrive with legitimate claims based on recent form, course affinity, and the way the races have shaped up. Arctic Tsar is the progressive youngster with upside, Gunfighter is the reliable favourite with strong track credentials, and Rambuso Creek is the local specialist dropping to a suitable trip.
Racing is never a certainty, of course — but if you’re looking for horses with clear, logical reasons to go close today, these three stand out.
