Exciting Evening at Kilbeggan: Le Coq Hardi and Venusienne Shine on Summer Monday Racing

On Monday, June 15, 2026, Kilbeggan Racecourse in County Westmeath, Ireland, hosted a delightful Summer Monday Evening Racing card. The right-handed, undulating track with its sharp turns and uphill finish provided the perfect stage for competitive National Hunt action under good to yielding conditions. Among the standout performers were Le Coq Hardi (IRE) in the 16:40 (approx. 4:40 PM) T. Murray & Son Ltd Beginners Chase and Venusienne (FR) in the 17:42 (approx. 5:42 PM) mares hurdle.

Le Coq Hardi Delivers in the Beginners Chase

The 7-year-old gelding by Youmzain out of Dollar D'estruval, trained by Henry de Bromhead and ridden by Mike O'Connor, entered the 2m4f beginners chase as the clear favorite (around 8/11 to 1/1). With a hurdles background including dual wins and a strong seasonal return (second at Limerick over the same trip), Le Coq Hardi set the standard in this field.

He justified the short odds impressively, winning the race and opening his chasing account. His proven ability over fences (previous useful form, including a runner-up at Kilbeggan last year) and fitness edge made him dominant. It was another strong showing for the de Bromhead yard, known for producing top-class jumpers.

Key Performance Highlights:

  • Distance: 2m 4f

  • Strong jumping and stamina to handle Kilbeggan’s demanding layout.

  • Rating around 135, confirming his promise as a chaser.

Venusienne Impresses in the Mares Hurdle

Later on the card, the 6-year-old brown mare Venusienne (FR) (by Authorized out of Eclipse De Cotte), trained by the legendary Willie Mullins and owned by John P. McManus, lined up in the 2m 2f 200y maiden hurdle. She arrived with solid credentials: a wide-margin winner at Tramore in October and previous Listed experience.

Ridden by Aidan Kelly, she was heavily backed (around 8/11) and looked poised to deliver. Mullins’ horses often improve with racing, and this French import has shown real potential when dropping back to more suitable company after tougher assignments.

Why Kilbeggan Matters

Kilbeggan is one of Ireland’s oldest jumps tracks, famous for its welcoming atmosphere and competitive racing. The Summer Monday evening meetings are especially popular, offering a relaxed vibe with great food, drinks, and thrilling finishes. Events like this serve as important trials and stepping stones toward bigger targets, such as the Galway Plate or other summer festivals.

Both horses exemplified the excitement of Irish National Hunt racing: Le Coq Hardi transitioning successfully to chasing, and Venusienne building on her maiden success under top-class training.

Congratulations to the connections of both winners! If you were trackside or watching the replays, these performances likely made the evening memorable. Who are your favorite emerging jumpers right now? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to discuss more racing stories.
